DRUMS OF THE WORLD

Iatmul Drum New Guinea

Iatmul - Chambri Lake Drum / Trommel / Tambour Papua New Guinea / Papua Neuguinea

Music plays an influential role in the Chambri Lake region, particularly during rituals related to ancestor worship. Hand drums accompany clan songs performed at important community events. The drum sound represents spirit and ancestor voices. Drums were carved with an adze and hollowed out by a slow burning process. Small black pellets of beeswax, used for fine tuning the sound quality of the drum, are attached in a circular pattern around the center of the drum skin. Tuning is accomplished by heating the drum skin over fire.
